When we give love to one person, it doesn’t mean we have less for anyone else so no one need ever be concerned about love being given by a friend or relative to another person that it will diminish the love available for you. There is absolutely no end to love!
I am grateful to my good friend and colleague, the late Rev. Dale Batesole, for this relevantly profound, yet simple story which he gave me permission to share with you. He didn’t know the origin of the story.
One afternoon Mr. Wicks was working in his garden breaking and resetting rhubarb crowns. As he came to the end of the patch he stood up to turn around noticing Mary, one of the little neighbor girls, walking toward him with her head down in a pensive mood.
Mr. Wicks went right on with his work of resetting his rhubarb. Soon the little girl was standing close by, but not saying a word. Without lifting his head Mr. Wicks asked, “How’s your new baby brother?”
At this question the little girl’s tears began to flow in torrents because Mary was painfully jealous of her new little brother. But the kindly and understanding Mr. Wicks talked on as though he hadn’t noticed the tears. “I suppose Mother and Daddy are pretty busy these days taking care of that little fellow. I imagine it might seem as though they are too busy to love you as much as they did before little brother came along. But, Mary, please watch me. I want to show you something. Come over close to me so you can see what I am doing. You see, Mary, I am dividing the rhubarb crowns. The more I divide this rhubarb the better it will grow. Not only that, Mary, it is prettier and much more tender, too!”
“Yes,” Mr. Wicks continued, “you know I loved my mother and father very much, Mary, but when I was a young man I met a lovely girl, almost as pretty as you are, and I married her. She is Mrs. Wicks. We hadn’t been married very long until God sent us a little baby. Then in a short time God sent us another baby. And not long after that second little baby came, God sent us a third little baby. And do you know, Mary, Mrs. Wicks and I found out that loving each new baby didn’t take a single mite away from the love we felt for the other little babies. The more we divided our love, the more it grew. Now you run along home and help your Mother and Daddy love your little brother, and then you’ll see that they love YOU all the more.”
The More Love is Divided and Expressed the More it Grows!
In this homely little story, there is a great and wonderful truth: Love is like Rhubarb. The more love is divided and expressed the more it grows, not only in quantity but in beauty and tenderness as well.
The Great Love Teacher said that we would be able to do greater works than He did. He knew that this would come true because in man’s progression, He knew that man would find more ways to express love. His was aware that there would be greater numbers of people expressing love in a greater number of ways. Therefore, more good would be evidenced.
Fountains of Love
Now is a good time for you, and me, and all of us to really get to dividing love among all whom we are close to and not withhold it from others as well. The more we divide it, the more it will grow in our consciousness and well-up so much within us, is makes of us, fountains of love from which all may drink and be nourished in beautiful way.
One of the most beneficial aspects of this is, it makes us healthier and causes a flood of love to flow back to us in copious measure. When we divide love enough and spread it around enough, our world will surely be a most beautiful place, even more beautiful and wonderful than it is now. Let’s not wait. Let’s give and accept more and more love, now!
Let the dividing begin!
