Optimism vs. Pessimism - Part One

Why is an optimist like a tea kettle? Because he goes on whistling even though he may be up to his neck in hot water!

Have you checked up lately to determine if you are an optimist or a pessimist? With all the challenges of today, there are those who see the bright side and those who seem to focus on doom and gloom.

Unfortunately, some people apparently love to dwell on the negative. No matter of how good things are, they are sure things will get worse. If you ask people their predictions for the future, some will give you all the reasons why things will get worse while others will say, "Life is good and getting better!"

Expectation plays a big part in one's viewpoint, and subsequently, what he gets out of life. If you are seeking employment, you may have to compete with thousands of other people when applying for a new job opportunity.

The important thing is to expect to be hired by the company you may be applying to regardless of how many others may be seeking the same job. Do your home work and present yourself in the best light while holding your faith and expectations high. If that particular job is not yours, do not be dismayed or discouraged. Take the optimistic approach and know that another job is waiting for you; that God is guiding you to the company that is actually seeking you.

By optimism, I am not talking about being bright about things with a negative, pessimistic attitude running beneath the surface. True optimism is born from a deep faith in God, from a conscious connection with the Source of all good.

This is gained through prayer and meditation in which you retreat from the world and focus your attention on the presence of God within you. God is love, therefore, when you do this you connect with the greatest, most positive force for good available to you and everyone.

I know a young lady who was let out of her job, but she was not worried. She was positive that at the right time, she would find new employment. I shared in her optimism and did what I could to encourage her.

About two months later, she went to work for a private University where she is well paid with excellent working conditions, and the opportunity to further her education.

Whatever you may be facing, take time for quiet meditation in which you consciously connect with the positive presence of God. Let all that God is strengthen you, give you courage and faith, and create in you a sense of optimism - a sure knowing that regardless of appearances, all is well and getting better. Then you are in tune with the Great Optimist. Only good can come, and you know it! - Lovingly, Rev. John
