Your Miracle-Working Power! - #3 of a 6-Part Miracles Series

When I was sixteen, I ran away from home. At the time, I was living on the Oregon Coast, so I made my way to Portland, and then traveled several thousand miles around the United States. I was hitchhiking in the days when hitchhiking was much safer than it is today!

Often I would sleep on the ground beside the highway, or wherever I could find a good place. Hardly ever was it comfortable. One night, somewhere between Coquille and Portland, Oregon, I went to sleep on one side of the highway and woke up the next morning on the other side! I have no idea how I did that. Since I must have walked in my sleep, it was a miracle that I was not hit by a car in the process. Not only that, I got through a barbed wire fence on one side of the road!

Just east of Portland, a nice man picked me up in his new Plymouth. He was headed to Missouri and invited me to stay with him all the way. He treated me very well, buying food and letting me sleep in his motel room when we stopped at night. It was a miracle for him to come along and take me so far, to feed me, and treat me so kindly. I think he was glad to have my company and he never asked me why I was out on the road by myself in the middle of summer.

Later during that same trip, I headed to Minnesota where I stayed with relatives for two weeks. When I was headed west from Minneapolis and was tired of hitchhiking, I decided to try riding a freight train. In eastern Montana, I got into a box car only to discover that I was not alone. One man was friendly, but I didn't trust him completely since I was carrying a lot of money in a secret compartment in my belt. When I say "a lot of money," it was to me at that time - over $20! It was money I had earned working at a county fair in Fergus Falls, Minnesota, for several days.

Riding in a box car was not much fun, especially at night. Even in the summer time, nights can be cold in Montana! My new found friend taught me to cover up with newspapers, but that didn't help much. And it was difficult to sleep because of the constant jarring of the train as it bumped along the tracks. By the time I got to Missoula, I had had enough of train riding and went back to hitchhiking along the highway.

Eventually, I made my way to Salem where the Oregon State Fair was in progress. Somehow I managed to get into the Fair and found Art, my younger brother, and some other kids from down on the coast. After the Fair, having learned of changes that had taken place at home, I decided to go back and returned to hitchhiking along the highway again. Before long, neighbors from home came along, and I rode in the back of their pick-up truck the rest of the way. Needless to say, my mother was surprised but very happy to see me!

These experiences are only a few of the things that happened on my hitchhiking and freight train riding journey around the country. A few of them were rather scary, but now I know that my angels were always with me, looking out for me and keep me safe. Angles are great miracle workers!

Sometimes angels appear as human beings. Miracles kept happening to me over the few months of my travels. It was a miracle that I arrived safely at my mother's new home. And miracles are still happening to me today!

Goat for Dinner - The young couple invited their elderly pastor for Sunday dinner. While they were in the kitchen preparing the meal, the minister asked their son what they were having. "Goat," the little boy replied. "Goat?" replied the startled man of the cloth, "Are you sure about that?" "Yep," said the youngster "I heard Dad say to Mom, 'Today is just as good as any to have that old goat for dinner."
